Visit Bansko, Bulgaria — where nature, history and mountain life meet

We loved Bansko ! For the hiking, the raw nature, the calm mountain atmosphere, and a beautiful town.

Located at the foot of the Pirin Mountains in south-western Bulgaria, Bansko is best known as the country’s main ski resort. But reducing it to skiing alone would be missing the point. It’s also a historic town, a gateway to nature, and an ideal base for exploring Pirin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

🏛️ A bit of history — from origins to today

Bansko has deep roots. While its earliest written records date back to the 16th century, during the Ottoman period, the settlement itself is believed to be much older.

The town truly flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming an important cultural and commercial centre during the Bulgarian National Revival. Merchants, craftsmen and intellectuals shaped its identity, leaving behind traditional stone houses, schools and churches — including the iconic Church of the Holy Trinity, now one of Bansko’s main landmarks.

After liberation from Ottoman rule, and later during the communist period, Bansko continued to evolve. In the early 2000s, it transformed rapidly into a modern ski resort, now known across Europe — while still retaining traces of its mountain-village soul.

⛷️ Bansko today: more than a ski resort

Yes, Bansko is Bulgaria’s largest ski area, with modern lifts and a solid reputation for winter sports. But what surprised us most was how enjoyable it is outside the slopes.

Whether you visit in winter or summer, Bansko is a place for:

  • walking and hiking,
  • slowing down,
  • and reconnecting with nature — without feeling isolated.

🥾 A memorable hike — towards Vihren Hut

One of our absolute highlights was a hike in Pirin National Park, heading towards Vihren Hut. Forests, open mountain landscapes, fresh air, and that feeling of space that only high mountains can give.

This trail is great to do with a dog, and even in winter it can be magical… as long as you’re sensible.
That means:

  • checking the weather beforehand,
  • staying on marked paths,
  • and remembering that this is a high-altitude environment, where conditions can change quickly.

With proper shoes and preparation, it’s an unforgettable experience.
👉 You can find several versions of this hike on Komoot, which is very helpful for choosing a route suited to your level and the season.

🛁 The spa Pulse

Bansko also has several spa and wellness centres. We tried Pulse, it felt very luxurious and relaxing… even if it’s smaller than what Instagram videos sometimes suggest (and yes, the famous “thunder room” you might have seen online wasn’t there).

One practical tip:
👉 Bring your own flip-flops and towel, otherwise they’ll charge you extra.

Still, after a long hike or a cold winter walk, it’s a lovely way to unwind.

The Church of the Holy Trinity : stunning inside

If there’s one place you shouldn’t miss in town, it’s the Church of the Holy Trinity. Built in 1835, it’s one of the finest examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture.

The exterior is rather sober, but inside, it’s breathtaking.
Intricate wood carvings, rich frescoes, and a powerful atmosphere make it genuinely impressive. Even if you’re not usually into churches, this one is worth stepping into.

🏘️ Other things to do in and around Bansko

Beyond hiking and skiing, you can also enjoy:

  • The old town, with its stone houses and quiet streets, full of character
  • Small local museums, including the Nikola Vaptsarov House Museum
  • Traditional taverns (mehanas), serving hearty Bulgarian dishes
  • Summer activities like cycling, gentler hikes, and cultural events
  • And even festivals such as the Bansko Jazz Festival, held every summer

🍽️ Food & atmosphere

Food in Bansko is comforting and generous.
The town is full of traditional mehanas, where you can try Bulgarian specialities like kapama or kavarma, often in a warm, candle-lit setting. It’s simple, authentic, and very much part of the local experience. We ate at Kasapinova Mehana and absolutely loved it !

💭 So… is Bansko worth visiting?

For us, yes — absolutely !

Bansko isn’t just a flashy ski destination.
It’s a mountain town with a real rhythm, surrounded by protected nature, shaped by history, and perfect for travellers who enjoy walking, breathing, and taking their time.
